It was a packed house at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn New York for the Thurman vs Lopez fight, but the house belong to the Polish Heavyweight fighter Adam Kownacki. Kownacki who was the co-main of the night against Gerald Washington clearly filled the Barclays Center with his many supporters.
Kownacki stops Gerald Washington in the 2nd round by TKO. Kownacki improved his undefeated record to (19-0, 15 KO’s).
ADAM KOWNACKI, Quote
“I trained hard for this fight. I prepared for 10 hard rounds, but I’m glad I got it done and ended it as fast as I did.
“I want to thank my team, without them I wouldn’t be where I’m at. I want that belt!
“We stuck with the game plan. I’m a pressure fighter. I worked on sitting down on my punches and I proved that I have great power when I do that.
“It’s amazing to have this support from the Polish fans. It definitely gives me extra energy.”
THURMAN VS LOPEZ
Ring rust there was after a long 22-month layoff. Keith Thurman defended his WBA welterweight title on Saturday beating Josesito Lopez by majority decision.
Thurman (29-0, 22 KOs) successfully returned to the ring, but he was very vulnerable at times as he was rocked by Josesito Lopez in their Premier Boxing Champions main event at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Lopez was dropped in round 2 by a short left hook, but round 7 was a crazy round for Lopez literally almost stoping thurman. Thurman’s victory against Lopez possibly sets him up for a showdown in the fall against the 40-year-old WBA secondary champion Manny Pacquiao.
KEITH THURMAN Quote, “He had me buzzed and shaken up in the seventh round, but I tried to stay on the outside away. I was a little off in my prediction of how long his arms were. He lunged in and was really willing to commit to the knockout.
“He came right for me. I said you wouldn’t see the best Keith Thurman tonight, but you’d still see a world class performance, and I gave you that tonight.
“I would most likely definitely take the Manny Pacquiao fight this year. I feel good. That was a beautiful fight. I’m ready to fight wherever Pacquiao wants it.
“My hand took some contact tonight. Lopez had a tough head but we held out strong. I wish i had gone to the body more, because I saw him breathing heavy. Either way, I will be back later this year. Believe that.”
JOSESITO LOPEZ Quote, “I definitely thought I held my own in that fight. I had him hurt in the seventh round and I was landing a lot of clean shots on him.
“I was disappointed I couldn’t finish him and get him out of there. If he thinks he’s the best welterweight out there, then I want two through five lined up for me.”
